The elite group of student athletes and teams who have been recipients of the Shipley Distinguished achievement Award have excelled at the state, regional or national level. The award winners, nominated by the community and selected by committee are York area amateur athletes who participated in York County sports, or collegiate level sports, and are under 25 years of age.
Bermudian Springs High School
Eagles Boys Baseball Team – Coach Bob Bonner’s team captured the 2010 PIAA Class AA State Championship, with a 5-3 victory over Martinsburg Central in the title game. It was the school’s first state team title of any kind.
Biglerville High School
Laike Gardner – The junior placed fifth at 135 pounds in the Cadet-Greco Roman competition at the 2010 USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D. His efforts helped the Pennsylvania team win the national Cadet Greco team title.
Blair Academy, New Jersey (Boarding School)
Brooks Black – The Dover native, a freshman, competing in the 2010 USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D., won the Cadet Greco-Roman heavyweight national title and the Cadet freestyle heavyweight title, earning All-America honors in both styles. His efforts helped the Pennsylvania team win the national Cadet Greco team title.
Central York High School
Paul Kuhn – The junior outside hitter was named to the 2010 PVCA Class AAA Finest 40 All-State Volleyball Team.
David Moler – The junior setter was named to the 2010 PVCA Class AAA Finest 40 All-State Volleyball Team.
Kyle Wisner – The junior middle hitter was named to the 2010 PVCA Class AAA Finest 40 All-State Volleyball Team.
Kyle Baublitz – The senior middle linebacker/defensive end was named to the 2009AP Class AAAA All-State Football First-Team. He recorded 123 tackles during his senior season. He is currently playing at Penn State.
Casey Morrison – The senior midfielder/defender was one of 40 girls named to the 2010 National Soccer Coaches Association of America People to People Youth All-America Team. She has also played for the United States Under-17 Team in several international junior events, and has competed in several foreign countries. According to TopDrawerSoccer.com, she is the No. 2 girl soccer recruit in Pennsylvania. She has committed to play collegiately for Boston College.
Dallastown Area High School
JROTC Marksmanship Team – The team, comprised of cadets Chelsea Hoecke, Devin Fink, Ryan Bollman, Alex Bollis and Tim Fry won the 2010 four-position national shoot sponsored by the National Rifle Association. The marksmen were tested for proficiency from the sitting position in addition to kneeling, prone and standing. With a final score of 1,414, the cadets proved themselves the best in the country in the Sporter Division.
Chelsea Hoecke – The JROTC cadet finished first in the nation among seniors at the 2010 four-position national shoot sponsored by the National Rifle Association.
Devin Fink – The JROTC cadet finished first in the nation among sophomores at the 2010 four-position national shoot sponsored by the National Rifle Association.
JROTC Girls Physical Training Team – The team, comprised of cadets Samantha Buterbaugh, Savannah Patacsil, Gabrielle DeSanti, Karley Marquet, Grace Taylor and Chelsea Hoecke achieved the highest score of all JROTC units in the country at the 2010 Marine Youth Physical Fitness National Competition, sponsored by the Marine Corps League, in San Diego, CA.
Karley Marquet – The JROTC cadet had the highest score among all JROTC girls in the country at the 2010 Marine Youth Physical Fitness National Competition.
JROTC Boys Physical Training Team – The team, comprised of cadets Timon Davis, Nic Horrocks, Tyler Helsel, Dakota Richardson, and Aaron Bentzel achieved the second highest score of all JROTC units in the country at the 2010 Marine Youth Physical Fitness National Competition, sponsored by the Marine Corps League, in San Diego, CA.
Christian Kaschak – The Wildcat junior midfielder was named to the 2010 PSCA boys All-State Soccer Team, and to the NSCAA Region II East Team. In addition he was named YAIAA Division I Player of the Year.
Ashley Lindo – As a junior was named to the 2010 PSCA girls All-State Soccer Team.
Caroline Bixler – The junior, while swimming for the York YMCA Aquatic Club, was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team by maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA, and achieving the required time standard in a single event. She has qualified for the National Grand Prix in multiple events.
Ben Kline – The senior, a Penn State recruit, was named to the 2010 Pennsylvania Sports Writers’ Class AAAA All-State football second team as a linebacker. He piled up a staggering 152 tackles (93 solo) and 3 interceptions. He was the backbone of a Wildcat team that went 11-1 and won an outright YAIAA Division I championship. In addition, he was named 2010 Player of the Year in Division I of the YAIAA. He capped his year off by being one of 53 players nationwide, and only two from Pennsylvania, named to Parade Magazine’s 48th annual All-American team.
Kadi McCoy – The senior outside hitter was named to the 2010 Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Class AAA All-State Team.
Four McGlynn – The senior was named to the 2010-11 AP Class AAAA All-State Basketball Third-Team. His 23.8 scoring average led the YAIAA, and he concluded his career with 1,854 points, and is the Wildcat’s all-time leading scorer.
Delone Catholic High School
Tyler Small - The senior, with a 40-4 record, captured the 2010 PIAA Class AA 125-pound state wrestling championship. He finished his high school career with a 154-24 record.
Dusty Reed - The running back/wide receiver was named to the 2009 AP Class AA All-State Football First-Team. He rushed for 1,425 yards with a shocking 8.25 yards per carry average and scored 25 touchdowns.
Wes Smith – The defensive end was named to the 2009 AP Class AA All-State football Second-Team.
Eastern York Senior High School
Chris Bair – The senior setter was named to the 2010 PVCA Class AA Finest 40 All-State Volleyball Team
Levi Myers – The senior outside hitter was named to the 2010 PVCA Class AA Finest 40 All State Volleyball Team.
Dylan Stein – The junior libero was named to the 2010 PVCA Class AA Finest 40 All-State Volleyball Team.
Austin Tillotson – The junior guard was named to the 2010 AP Class AAA All-State Basketball first-team. He was also named the Daily Record/Sunday News YAIAA Division III/IV Player of the Year. His efforts helped the Golden Knights capture their first District III title in 22 years, a program single-season record 31 wins and a place in the PIAA Class AAA semi-finals.
Dani Krohn – The senior was named to the 2010 PSCA girls All-State Soccer Team.

Pete Yingst – The senior was named to the 2010-11 AP Class AA Basketball All-State Third-Team.
Home Schooled
Noah Martin – The York YMCA Aquatic Club swimmer was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team by maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA and achieving the required time standard in a single event. He finished 17th in the mile at the Junior National Championships, and also qualified for the Senior National Championships.
Kennard Dale High School
Chance Marsteller – As an eighth grader, won the Cadet freestyle 145-pound title, and took fourth in the 145-pound Cadet-Greco Roman competition, at the 2010 USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior National Championships. He earned All-America honors in both styles. His efforts helped the Pennsylvania team win the Cadet Greco team title.
Ethan Hornbarger – The fullback was named to the 2009 AP Class AAA All-State football Second-Team. He gained 1,334 yards with 15 touchdowns.
Littlestown Senior High School
Matt Koontz – The senior wide receiver was named to the 2009 AP Class AA All-State football First-Team. He pulled in 51 catches for 1,040 yards and 13 touchdowns.
New Oxford Senior High School
Jordan Conaway – The Colonial wrestler brought home his school’s first PIAA wrestling championship by capturing the gold medal in the Class AAA 112-pound weight class, with a dominating 10-4 major decision against the defending state champion.
Northeastern Senior High School
Bobcats Boys Volleyball Team – Captured the 2010 PIAA Class AA State Championship with a four-game victory over Meadville in the title match-up.
Reid Lowery – The junior libero was named to the 2010 PVCA Class AA Finest 40 All-State boys Volleyball Team.

Sam Crater – The senior pitcher was named to the 2010 Pennsylvania High School Baseball Coaches Association Class AAA/AAAA All-State First-Team.
Red Lion Area Senior High School
Morgan Pfaff – The junior swimmer, who also swims for the York YMCA Aquatic Club, was named to the 2010 USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team. Requirements for this award include having a minimum 3.5 GPA, and becoming a national-level swimmer. She was also named a 2009-10 High School All-American. She holds YAIAA records in both the 100 Individual Medley and the 100 Backstroke.
Andrew Zeller – The senior, a 6-foot-6, 286-pound University of Maryland recruit, was named to the 2010 Pennsylvania Sports Writers’ Class AAAA All-State football second team as a defensive lineman. He was unstoppable during the Lions’ District 3 playoff run, and finished the season with 67 tackles and a team high 7 sacks.
Gisselle Truiett – The senior leader of the Lady Lions was named to the 2010-11 AP Class AAAA girls basketball All-State Third-Team.
Spring Grove Senior High School
Hali Flickinger – The York YMCA Aquatic Club swimmer, while swimming at the YMCA National Swimming Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., finished first in the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:12.51, which set a new YMCA national record.
Keith Stambaugh – With an average of 41.1 yards, the Rocket punter was named to the 2009 AP All-State football second-team
Kayla Yingling – The junior Libero was named to the 2010 Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Class AAA All-State Team. She helped the Rockettes win a share of the York-Adams League Division I crown.
Susquehannock High School
Mike Marshner – The Warrior lacrosse player was named a 2010 US Lacrosse All-American. In addition he was named a two-time YAIAA All Star and 2010 Player of the Year.
Lindsay Miller – The Warrior volleyball player was named to the 2010 PVCA Class AA All-State team.
Sherelle Walker – The Warrior volleyball player was named to the 2010 PVCA Class AA All-State team.
West York Area High School
Alex Shinsky – The senior Bulldog forward was named to the 2010 Parade Magazine Boys’ All American Soccer Team for the second straight year. In addition, Top Drawer Soccer ranked the midfielder as the No. 1 recruit in the country among players in the class of 2011. Last year he scored a goal at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria. In addition, he was named to the 2010 PSCA All-State Soccer Team and the NSCAA Region II East Team. He was also one of 37 boys named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America People to People Youth All-America Team. He will be playing NCAA Division I college soccer at the University of Maryland.
Fred Lucas – The senior Bulldog midfielder was named to the 2010 PSCA All-State Soccer Team. He was also named YAIAA Division II Player of the Year.
Andy Sides – The senior opposite hitter was named to the 2010 PVCA Class AA Finest 40 All-State boys Volleyball Team.
Paige Elliott – The senior was named to the 2010 AP Class AAA All-State Basketball Third-Team. She helped her team to a 29-3 season, the best record in program history, a second-place finish in the District 3-AAA tournament and a quarterfinal appearance in the PIAA Class AAA state playoffs. She plans to play for West Chester University.
Darior Bundy – The linebacker was named to the 2009 AP Class AAA All-State football second-team. He set the tempo for the Bulldogs, scoring three defensive touchdowns in three consecutive games.
Dan Gay – The wide receiver was named to the 2009 AP Class AAA All-State football Second-Team.
Kaden Hepler – The sophomore pitcher was named to the 2010 Pennsylvania High School Baseball Coaches Association Class AAA/AAAA All-State Second-Team.
Eli Vottero – The senior infielder was named to the 2010 Pennsylvania High School Baseball Coaches Association Class AAA/AAAA All-State Second-Team.
William Penn High School
Kelvin Parker – The senior was named to the 2010-11 AP Class AAAA All-State Basketball First-Team. He led his team to the YAIAA Division I title and its first District 3-AAAA crown since 1995. He concludes his career as his school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,453 points.
Wilson High School
Taylor Brew – The junior, while swimming for the York YMCA Aquatic Club, was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team by maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA and achieving the required time standard in a single event. She has qualified for the National Grand Prix in multiple events.

Gary Laucks – The wide receiver was named to the 2009 AP Class A All-State football Second-Team.
York Suburban Senior High School
Sada Stewart – The York YMCA Aquatic Club swimmer, while swimming at the YMCA National Swimming Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., swam to a first- place finish in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:01.15. She also recorded two fourth-place finishes at the meet.
Clarion University
Morgan Oberlander (Dallastown) – The junior picked up three All-America certificates at the 2011 NCAA Division II Women’s Swimming Championships by finishing seventh in the 200 butterfly, and by helping the 800 free relay finish sixth and the 400 medley relay finish eighth
Lebanon Valley College
Andrea Hoover (Susquehannock) – The senior was named to the 2011 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division III All-American first team and to the D3hoops All-American second team. She is a two-time Centennial Conference Player of the Year who finished her career as her school’s all-time assist leader and sixth best scorer in school history. This year she led her team to a school record 28-3 mark and the college’s first Elite 8 appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Millersville University
Elicia Anderson (Eastern) – The sophomore, while competing in the 2010 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships in Louisville, KY, completed the Tom Sawyer Park 6K course in 21 minutes 43.5 seconds, finishing 14th in a field of 187 runners, and earning the first All-America honor of her career. She earned her second All-America honor by Placing tenth in the 5,000-meter run at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. She is the sixth Millersville runner to earn All-American status.
Moravian College
Micah Leonard (William Penn) – The freshman earned All-America honors in the long jump at the 2009-10 NCAA Division III indoor track and field Championships. Her leap of 18 feet, 3 inches placed her fifth, with the top eight finishers becoming All-Americans.
Shippensburg University
Emily Dubs (Northeastern) – The senior received NCAA Division II All-America honors after running the opening 1,200 meter leg for SU’s indoor distance medley relay team that won the 2011Division II national title.
University of Oklahoma
Amy Backel (Northern) – The senior javelin thrower was crowned Big 12 champion and named a two-time NCAA Division I All-American in 2010. In addition, she is a four-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, and maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for three of four years. She became the first Oklahoma male or female to be a three-time CoSida Academic All-American. In 2010 she was one of eight collegiate athletes nationwide to receive the prestigious NCAA Top VIII award for success on the field, in the classroom and in the community. She continues to train for the upcoming Olympics while completing her Masters Degree in civil engineering.
Penn State York
Chase McGowan (Dallastown) – The Sophomore forward has been named a United States Collegiate Athletic Association Academic All-American. In addition, he was also named to the Penn State University Athletic Conference 2009-10 All-Conference Basketball Team.
Randolph-Macon College
Molly Ariail (York Suburban) - The senior was named to the 2010 NCAA Division III State Farm Coaches’ All-American Team, and capped her season off by being named the DIII News National Player of the Year. She was also named her school’s female student-athlete of the year and concluded her career as the Randolph-Macon all-time career rebounding leader (1,016) and second on the all-time career scoring list (1,845 points). She became just the second women’s basketball Student-athlete in Old Dominion Athletic Conference history to win three Player of the Year awards.
Shippensburg University
Jenn Deardorff (Dallastown) – The freshman biology/pre-physical therapy major was named a Scholar Athlete by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for the 2009-10 academic year. She earned the honor by maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 or better while playing varsity softball.
Julie Brown (Dallastown) – The freshman swimmer was a member of the Shipp 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams, both of which achieved All-American status at the 2010-11 NCAA Division II National Swimming Championships.
Temple University
Patrick McLaughlin (Susquehannock) – After enduring a medical red shirt senior season, the Owl gymnast was named an All-American by placing seventh on the parallel bars at the 2011 NCAA Division I Gymnastics Championships. He was also named his school’s Comeback Athlete of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year.
York College of Pennsylvania
Nick Brady (Delone Catholic) – The senior guard was named a 2010 NABC/State Farm Division III basketball third-team All-American. He was also named Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He became the second Spartan ever to earn the national NABC award, and closed out his career as one of just two Spartans to record 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 200 3-point field goals. Brady is one of just 18 players out of more than 6,400 in Division III to be recognized on the All-American team.
York College Women’s soccer team – Coach Vicki Sterner’s Spartans received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for the 2009-10 academic year, by posting a grade point average of 3.33.
James Laughlin – The senior 285-pound wrestler was named as a National Wrestling Coaches Association 2010-2011 Division III Scholar All-American. He is the 28th individual to be honored with the accolade in the history of the Spartan program.
Alex Martocello – The 185-pound junior earned All-American status by finishing fourth at the 2011 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.
Chris Albright – The 141-pound sophomore earned All-American status by finishing fifth at the 2011 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.
